She relocates in Baltimore with her resentful sons Chris (Chris O'Donnell) and Matt (Charlie Korsmo) and takes a job at a ramshackle gourmet food store managed by Lisa Coleman (Kathy Bates). Men Don't Leave offers in Beth an extremely vulnerable, easily discouraged person who can't seem to get a grip on her reduced circumstances. Even so, she and her sons eventually pull themselves together, despite many side trips with Wrong Lovers and False Friends. Some of the film's best moments involve Joan Cusack, playing a mixed-up nurse with whom Chris falls in love. Representing the comeback of director Paul Brickman after a seven-year gap, Men Don't Leave is a slightly more upbeat American version of the French film La Vie Continue. Hal Erickson, Rovi

I agree with the other reviewer, this is Jessica Lange's best film role. The story captures the essence of a family in transition after the death of the husband and breadwinner of the family. Beth (Mom) is trying to rebuild their lives while still in the grieving process, the relocation from suburban life to Baltimore is a shock that her sons seem to cope with better than she does. Her depression takes over and she doesn't even see her younger sons desperate attempts to get his mother back. A beautiful and touching film, sad, but has some funny moments, too, usually involving Joan Cusack as the ditzy neighbor that seduces the older son. Wonderful and poignant movie. Get your hanky ready.

A real chick flick...
I watched this movie years ago as a married woman and fell in love with it.Now as a young widow myself I can relate to it much more.In my opinion one of Jessica Langes best roles ever. She shows the true deepth and determination of all woman when thrown in the deep end. She works hard to support her kids and goes through all the trials and emotions that come with teenagers. it is tough being a single parent. Then she has a new love interest to make her feel special again though another relationship is the last thing on her mind. One of the first real chick flick movies. A must see I never tire of. Enjoy.
