Not illustrated. 1888 Excerpt: ...Jehan Foucquet; in his landscapes he is a pupil of Nicolas Poussin; he touches hands with Van Dyck and Rembrandt in his etchings, and with Vittore Pisano in his medals. His colour, again--severe, solemn, chastened--is modern in no sense of the word; and the contrast between himself and his contemporaries is made more trenchant by the austerity of his ideals, his disdain of trick, the sustained dignity, the sobriety and the distinction, of his art. It has been said of him, and with truth, that he lacks charm, and seeks and finds too exclusively the beauty of ugliness. But it is also true that he is a consummate artist, whose influence for good can hardly fail to be enduring and profound. 71. Les Demoiselles du Mois de Marie. The interior of a village church. To the right a congregation of peasant girls, seated for confirmation. 41 by 56 inches. 1 mitre 40 centimetres by 1 metre 43'50 centimetres. 1161. Lent by CONSTANTINE A. IONIDES, Esq., London. Seller's Description:
Very Good. No Jacket. Complete. Numbered 424 of a limited edition of 520 copies. A placid copy. Linen covered boards, gilt stamped titling and decoration. The boards and gilt have amiable wear, scuffing. The edges have shelving and storage wear and knocks. Despite the shabbily endearing appearance, the boards are steady and sound. Thick, handmade paper (faint watermark). Gift inscription from W Blaikie (Walter Blaikie was a partner with T & A Constable, and a prominent citizen of Edinburgh). The contents are mellowed, mild-mannered. They have some flushes, smears of foxing here and there. Small areas of age related marks. However, the pages are also genteel, healthy, clean and clear, more than confident, generous, benevolent, convivial. fk.
