Apparently the author, Anna Seward, had a desire to marry Erasmus Darwin and was somewhat offended when he married Elizabeth Pole after the death of his first wife. Charles Darwin was not particularly happy with this book about his grandfather and claims to have written the introduction to Krause's biography of Erasmus Darwin in order to contradict some of what Seward wrote.
