I Was now about sixteen years of age, and being fascinated with the charms of ease, after the sea of vicissitudes on which I had been tossed about, and the restless course in which I had been involved, I abandoned all thoughts of returning to Guernsey, and forfeited my promise to the American captain. This was an error, for as the engagement was a voluntary act, it ought to have been fulfilled; this I mention for the benefit of those young persons into whose hands this narrative may fall, as a breach of social obligation is often attended with worldly inconveniences, and always with the loss of character. I remained at home about six months, part of which was occupied in fishing, but I found the employment very dull and tiresome after the roving life I had led; and as the smuggling trade was then plied very briskly in the neighbourhood, I determined to try my fortune in it. I accordingly engaged in a small vessel which sailed out of Lyme to the Islands, in which I made a voyage with pretty good success, in the course of four months after which she was laid up. Being again in want of a situation, I applied to Captain Jarvis, and agreed to go with him in a vessel called the Friends, which belonged to Beer and Seaton, but then lying in Bridport harbour. As soon as she was rigged we proceeded to sea, but contrary winds coming on, we were obliged to put into Lyme; the next day the wind being favourable, at six o'clock in the evening we put to sea again, and proceeded to Tenby, in Wales, where we were bound for culm. At eight o'clock the captain set the watch, and it was my turn to remain below; at twelve I went on deck, and continued till four, when I went below again, but was scarcely dropped asleep, when I was aroused by hearing...
