Lacking in formal training to apply this principle, Marion Howard fell back on her own instincts; a talent for innovation in handling small crisis, a rich imagination in engaging a child's interest and a love of learning. A child will learn, she says, as long as you make it fun. When Tiny Tot opened in 1955, child care centers were largely unknown. Those that were in existence were essentially only babysitting. In Springfield, Illinois, only one such establishment existed. When Marion sought guidelines she found herself left to her own devices. So she went ahead to create a physical facility using family members as assistants. The principle qualifications for teachers were an ability to reach out to children and a willingness to follow her ideas about an organized program of learning and recreation. Children should be taught to be courageous, cooperative, respectful, responsible and considerate of others. Marion Howard was not content to launch this worthy project and then leave its actual execution to others. She was a constant presence in all activities, consistently providing instant solutions to difficulties, large and small, as they arose.
