This river has a deep channel, being nowhere less than 3 metres, and generally considerably more, but the lake Mirim is shallow. Some dredging is, however, being done, but apparently not very effectively. The rise and fall of the tide at Sao Pedro, and in the channels between Sao Pedro and the sea, depend mainly on the winds. The range is less than 1 metre. A granite quay has been built in front of the Custom House, and a new quay is being built in front of the town. Dredgers have worked in the - Barca - channel, and in fr/mt of the town, but the channel is still narrow, tortuous, and shallow.
