As the title suggests, they explore facets of melancholy, whether caused by unrequited love, mourning, or premonitions of apocalypse. Would the commonality have been recognizable to the early Renaissance mind? It's interesting to speculate; the concept of melancholy certainly lasted through centuries of music, from the troubadours to the English lute song and beyond. The final settings of the grim Canto de la Sibila (the "Song of the Sibyl," still performed on Sardinia and Mallorca) are especially intriguing in this regard and are extremely compelling in their stark, chant-like language.
