Guitarist Peter Leitch had worked with pianist John Hicks, bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith on several previous occasions, so it is not surprising to find that they only needed a four-hour session to record this entire CD. The musicians clearly sound very comfortable with each other and, even on the more rapid pieces (such as Hicks' "Time" and "This Is New"), everyone seems very relaxed. Leitch's warm mellow sound is a throwback to the Barney Kessel/Herb Ellis tradition although his tone is distinctive and his ideas are fresh; he takes "In a Sentimental Mood" unaccompanied. A fine example of 1990s bebop as played by some of the best. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
