Boyhood fun and pastimes have changed a lot since the 1920s & '30s McKee's Mills Memories: A Journal of People, Places and Tall Tales... offers the reader a broad-sweeping glance at life in rural New Brunswick (Canada) in the 1920's and '30s and beyond. These are the journals of Calvin L. Hicks (1921 - 2011) . He talks about life on a Kent County farm, the associated joys and challenges and how hard work allowed one to then enjoy the reward of simple pleasures. He recalls playing hockey between Bouctouche and Saint-Antoine, moonlit ice skating on the Little Bouchtouche (or Mahalawadiac) River and borrowing a railroad trolley for memorable joy-rides. Joys in later years were comprised of salmon fishing on the mighty Miramichi River watershed, salmon bakes in Alaska and reuniting with family members who had, over the years, spread increasingly out around North America. No matter how far he travelled, or what he experienced, this little corner of rural New Brunswick, McKee's Mills - a primarily Anglophone community quite surrounded by Francophones - never ceased to capture his heart. About The Author Calvin L. Hicks filled two journals during the winter of 2006-2007 at the age of 85. It was his first winter following the death of Margaret (Abrams) Hicks his wife of 63 years. His grandson, Mike Long asked him to write down memories of his childhood and youth, family traditions, etc. so that they'd not be lost to the family's history. Mike Long spent two months in the summer of 2018 compiling and editing his grandfather's journals. Edits were light enough to preserve his unique voice and had, for main objective, to reduce repetitive content. Are you ready to be transported to a simpler time?
