A man had a wife who was continually scolding him. A.nd she would frequently go at him with shut fists and beat him. She was a small woman and he was a large man. A neighbor said to the man one day that he should not let his wife beat him in that way. "Oh," replied the man, "it doesn't hurt me very much, and it seems to do Betsey a powerful sight of good." (Seats himself.) President. The matter seems to be entirely straightened up now, and Andrew may proceed with his speech. Andrew. Then, Mr. President, I will turn now to the clean woman. And let me compare her with the dirty woman. See the difference in the face, in the dress. Then look into the house. A neat, tidy kitchen with the kettle steaming for tea, a snowy cloth on the table, an inviting repast spread and awaiting the coming of her husband. Now, look at the dirty woman. Her hair hangs in knots and rings and bunches, and looks as if it had not been combed for three days, her apron is turned inside out to hide some of the dirt, her finger nails are long, her dress is so soiled and bedraggled you can't decide as to the original color of it, her shoes have holes at the toes and are down at the heels. Look at her kitchen, look at her dining-room, look at her parlor. Dirt in all quarters and slovenliness visible at every turn.
