A Straightforward Read
Leonard's book is a valuable read as it leaves the reader with a few simple principles of self-discipline and mindfulness that allow one to view humdrum routine with new, more appreciative eyes, working toward higher goals. Some of Leonard's observations on our society's obsession with instant gratification are haunting and have stayed with me for days.
If there's one weakness of the book, it's this same simplicity. The book proposes a few straightforward tenets. These are largely self-evident and need little explanation or illustration. But I found much of the book was occupied with exactly this needless repetition and illustration. In places Leonard seems to struggle to fill space, as if he's paid by the word. The chapter on "The Edge" is an example: the principle--push your limits--could have been explained and illustrated in two or three paragraphs, but the chapter restates the principle over and over again, stretching into several pages.
This may be Leonard falling into the same trap he highlights earlier in the book: our consumer's hunger for quantity over simple and sparing quality.
A worthwhile read for anyone who wants a fresh perspective on daily work, whatever their vocation.
