Masters Of Jazz 1: Traditional Classics is the first installment in Rhino's attempt to distill the history of jazz to a handful of discs. Of course, that means that it designed with the neophyte in mind -- scholars and jazz purists, who always disdian various artists collections and compilations in general, will find the cut and paste nature of the series overwhelmingly frustrating. However, if you are looking for an introduction to a genre as rich and complex as jazz, Masters of Jazz does a fairly good job. Masters Of Jazz 1: Traditional Classics covers a number of standards that need to be known by any jazz fan, such as Fats Waller's "Honeysuckle Rose," and Bessie Smith's "St. Louis Blues," Benny Goodman's "That's A Plenty," Duke Ellington's "Black and Tan Fantasie," and Louie Armstrong's "Struttin' With Some Barbecue." While the artists involved may have written or recorded songs that are equally classic -- and several classic artists are nowhere to be seem -- Tradtionatl Classics remains an excellent overview of the early years of recorded jazz and the compositions and styles that provided the foundation of the entire genre. ~ Leo Stanley, Rovi
