This is THE piano book for those interested in that body of literature from the late 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries. Included with the famous names are numerous composers whose names are no longer known but whose music is nonetheless interesting. In some cases, there are some undiscovered gems known to our great-grandparents but unfortunately didn't survive the age of commercial media. Everyone knows Beethoven, Mozart, Mendelssohn, and Schumann - these are included. Yet what of Theodore Lack, Ignaz Leybach, Louis Lefebure-Wely, Christian Sinding? All great keyboardists in their time, now totally forgotten except for those who own this treasury of music. I would like to emphasize that you NOT be tempted by modern versions that claim this same title. Only the 1918 version is the definitive version of this work. Do not waste your time and money on the updated epigone - nay, outright impostor. If it does not say 1918 edition or reprint of the original 1918 edition, then you haven't got this book. If you do, you have a great start to a fine classical music education.
