This 1989 recording, later reissued in Hyperion's budget Helios line, brought many listeners to the sacred cathedral repertory. There are good recordings of some of this music by smaller groups, such as the Sixteen, but there's a strong case to be made for a version with a sizable choir of men and boys, operating in a rich, complex acoustic, and that's exactly what you get here. Although much of the music here dates from the seventeenth century, it is really of the Renaissance in style; the later pieces by Francisco López Capillas and Antonio de Salazar are simpler than the big double-choir works of Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla, and there is some use of a small continuo of dulcian, harp, and organ, but the Italianate Baroque style did not appear in Mexico until...
