The third manned mission to the surface of Mars has just landed safely, and the excited crew gets ready for a few months of peaceful scientific exploration on the red planet. Happily for us that is not in the cards - and the crew tragically loses all hope (and their return ship) of getting back to Earth at all.
The two previous manned missions to Mars both end in tragedy, and the death of the entirety of both crews. With the loss of their own return ship, the third mission?s team must grapple with the reality of the situation: that none of them could return, and that their only chance lies in a hopeless trek across the surface of Mars.
This is the first novel by Mr. Landis, and it's a pretty good one. If you're in the mood for a believable story that depicts what the surface of Mars might be like, then you'll enjoy this book. If you're a hard science fiction fan, then the technology will intrigue you and the science will keep you held in when the plot or the characters are wearing thin.
The plot is a very interesting one - but the writing could be better. Most of the characters in the story I never developed an attachment to, and the frequent character flashbacks becomes more tedious than interesting and only succeeds in fraying my patience. Through about 200 pages I was ready to set the book down - but it becomes much better in the second half, as the least interesting characters move on and the story becomes mainly about struggle on Mars and the planet itself and less about the retrospectives.
3 stars for an interesting and ultimately fun read that I enjoyed, but will probably never re-read. I'd recommend this book to fans of science fiction (especially hard science fiction), or to those who have any interest in Mars, or have an active imagination.
