To predetermined confines Chaos fell, --To the new life within its womb gave birth, And instant rose the God-invited Earth;--When on that Earth the Almighty hand had placed The very form His likeness had embraced, To take the land on which he proudly stood, And use its countless offerings as he would;--To hold o'er all the brute creation sway, Where all was his to serve him and obey: --B One task there yet remained--one thing undone: Man wandered through his paradise alone; Alone he passed each day; alone each night; The beasts his care, the birds his fond delight. To enhance a scene of happiness and pride, The Omniscient power the missing link supplied: His noblest work, perfect at His command, Latest and best, now left the Master-hand, And Woman, in her glory, stood confessed, In purity and innocency dressed. Bone of his bone, flesh of his flesh, she stood, The unconscious partner of his heart and blood; A fitting helpmate, counsellor, and friend, In whom the Graces emulously contend: Fairness of form, with earnestness of soul, But all combined, divinity the whole.
