Meanwhile, in Rome, the conspiracies against Caesar take an unexpected turn, plunging Fronto and his friends into a world of crime, violence and intrigue that threaten everything the legate cares about. The city is in turmoil and the republic is teetering on the brink of disaster. (This is the third book in a series known as Marius' Mules, based upon Gaius Julius Caesar's army in Gaul)
The third year in Gaul offers the perfect setting for Mr. Turney. It was a very busy season with legions putting down revolts all over the territory. And we know Caesar was having big problems back in Rome. This complicated history, in Mr. Turney's very capable hands, becomes an exciting story with bold, likeable characters. It is rich with gory battle scenes and dramatic espionage. Even the changes in terrain and weather are hit head-on by his detailed coverage of each event, submitting the reader to the same miseries as the soldiers: fatigue; soggy tunics and ill-fitting gear; hunger; fear.
And I am always amazed at Mr. Turney's ability to come up with solutions for the Roman army. Caesar's army managed to accomplish so many impossible feats of victory, deep in enemy territory. Yet, in his reports, Caesar seldom details 'how' these victories were won. Turney's solutions to these questions are so creative, yet thoroughly possible, that it makes one marvel.
I always enjoy the comaraderie Mr. Turney creates, not only between his characters, but between the reader and the characters as well. It's this bond, with the likes of Legate Fronto, that leaves me a bit sad as I finish each book. Fortunately, this is a series. And because the story builds, each book is even more thrilling than the one before, if that is possible. I anxiously await the release of Marius' Mules IV.
