The booklet notes, in English and Italian, consist mostly of an impressionistic depiction of Marais' death in 1728; there is a short biography of Marais, but no information about the performers or the music involved; Italian bass viol player Andrea de Carlo and the other musicians, apparently of various nationalities (and appearing on the Los Angeles-area MA Recordings label), play historical instruments. The music is drawn from Marais' books of suites for bass viol (or in one case two bass viols) and continuo, here a theorbo or harpsichord. The performances are attractively intimate and reflective in scope, without a great deal of rhythmic freedom.
