Elmer Bernstein's score to the little-seen 1986 historical drama Marie Ward captures the composer at his most rapturous, drawing from a vast pool of classical and Baroque influences to create music of uncommon power and sophistication. Despite the absence of a main theme as indelible as Bernstein's scores for The Magnificent Seven or The Great Escape, Marie Ward deserves consideration among his finest work for its sheer mastery of mood and nuance.
