Teddi King is a fine vocalist who has been somewhat overlooked since her premature death in 1977, at the age of only 46. Though she was weakened by illness, she is very much in top form in this brilliant 1973 concert with Marian McPartland, bassist Rusty Gilder, and drummer Eric Nebbia, exploring numerous standards and show tunes in her own expressive way. With McPartland's intuitive piano backing her, King gets to the essence of each song, restoring the oft-ignored verse to several of them, while captivating her appreciative audience at The New York Public Library, which included composers Harold Arlen, Howard Dietz, Lewis Alter, and Alec Wilder. But it is her swinging finale of Wilder's "While You're Young" (though McPartland's sensitive introduction is briefly overwhelmed with applause as the audience recognizes the song) that should leave King fans wanting more, while new fans will join the hunt for other releases by the late vocalist. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi
