The contours are usually sketched in the field, or " in sight of the facts," and when the sketcher can thus see the ground before him he will need only a few critical points to enable him to fill in the contours. However, if the necessary critical points have been selected, an expert sketcher can put in the contours very accurately, without again seeing the ground, by aid of his knowledge of the general characteristics of ground forms and the laws governing them. LOGICAL OR MECHANICAL CONTOURING. The process of sketching in the contours by the aid of located critical points alone, and without seeing the ground, is known as logical (probable) or mechanical con-' touring. It is a most valuable means of instruction, as it gives the student a practical acquaintance with ground forms and the laws governing contours. It also teaches him just which are the critical points in the topographical control, trains him to select all the really critical points which he needs, and to avoid cluttering his map and wasting valuable time by locating points which are not needed. Practice in logical contouring is accordingly essential to become an expert sketcher, and considerable time and patience may well be devoted to it. The student should first solve some simple typical problems. He should then trace from a contoured map what he regards as the critical points, being limited as to the number he may select, and sketch in the contours from the points thus selected. His result should then be compared with the map. Finally the student should himself sketch a piece of terrain, locating the critical points of the topographical control, and fill in the contours without again seeing the ground.
