Seller's Description:
1961. Dover. Softbacks. Books-Good, sunned. 8x5.5. 910pp. Frontis map, 783 b/w illus by Charles Edward Faxon & Mary W. Gill. This monumental volume, incorporating the results of 44 years of original research, is one of the most comprehensive and reliable volumes on the subject. It includes 185 genera and 717 species of trees (and many shrubs) found in the United States, Canada and Alaska.
The problem with most tree books is they only have "the most common" species. But if you are serious about trees, you already know the hundred or so common ones, or you can narrow it down at least to Genus. You need help with the UNCOMMON ones. Sargent's book has them all! Each entry includes a detailed botanical description and a beautiful black and white illustration of the leaf, flower and seed. The book also includes a map of the "Principle Tree Regions of North America", a "Synopsis of the Families of Plants Described in the Book", an "Analytical Key to the Genera", and an index. This book is appropriate for any professional botanist, ecologist, landscape architect, forester, serious garden hobbiest, or student of the above. It may not be as flashy as one with full color pictures, and you may need a dictionary for some of the descriptions, but if you persevere, even a botanical novice can identify ANY tree. Have doubts? Mr. Sargent was the Director of the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University and the book has been in (and out) of print and in demand since 1902.
