The Royal Society, is a learned society. Founded in November 1660, it was granted a royal charter by King Charles II as "The Royal Society". It is the oldest national scientific institution in the world. The society is the United Kingdom's and Commonwealth of Nations' Academy of Sciences and fulfills a number of roles: promoting science and its benefits, recognizing excellence in science, supporting outstanding science, providing scientific advice for policy, fostering international and global cooperation, education and public engagement. Plutonium has been separated from the other products in spent fuel from nuclear reactors since the early 1950s in the UK, and this practice meant that the UK had a substantial stock of separated plutonium in store. The existing stockpile, along with any additions to it, required management. The need for scientific information to underpin the development of policy for the management of this material and to inform the choice of options for disposal or use is the subject of this report. The report summarizes then current practice in regard to production and disposal of civil plutonium in the UK and reviews the technical options then available or under development, for managing or using plutonium separated from spent fuel by reprocessing. The report was reviewed and endorsed by the Council of the Society.
