Prostate problems and prostate cancer are on the rise. In the USA
prostate cancer is the second most common form of cancer after skin cancer among men. In Britain it tops the list. However, even today far too many adult men are unaware of the exact function of the prostate gland and the havoc it may cause in later years in life. Statistics indicate that some 95% of men over the age of 45 have an enlarged prostate and whilst not every man will end up having prostate cancer, many of the early symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer have some things in common, and this is one of the few books, written by a best-selling novelist, who has suffered from prostate cancer, which gives a blow-by-blow account of the consequences.
Michael Korda's account of his battle against prostate cancer and what he had to go through is written with candour, feeling and some humour and he says:
"I was shortly to discover that I wasn't alone when it came to anger. It exists in every prostate.cancer patient, to a greater or lesser degree - even those who have been 'cured'." True, but almost everyone who has any form of cancer probably goes through this at some point.
Incontinence and impotence are often related to prostate afflictions, not just prostate cancer, but are subjects which, for all sorts of reasons, are not discussed as frequently or openly as they should be. Indeed, many men seem to be better informed about problems pertaining to breast cancer than prostate cancer, as anything relating to breasts gets more media exposure and coverage. This is where Korda's revelations may be an eye opener, even for those who are conversant with prostate problems.
Many men suffering from prostate problems, not just prostate cancer, may well be amazed to find how many other men are in the same boat. Korda's book could be of immense help to them and, indeed, to the women in their lives. As Korda observes, oncologists and urologists are not the best listeners, as "most doctors simply don't have the time. Wives, friends, siblings, parents, professional therapists, may all be good listeners, but they haven't lived through it, they simply don't know what it's like... But those who have been through it understand - understsnd about impotence, incontinence, the fear of waiting to hear what the number is after a PSA test, the difficulty of getting a straight answer out of doctors and the occasional pain of getting a straighter answer than you wanted."
This book was first published in 1996. A lot of research and advances have taken place in the field of BPH and prostate cancer since then, but Korda's detailed and brutally frank account of what happens when prostate cancer strikes and how it may affect a man's day-to-day life for the rest of his days is as relevant today as it was then. It should hav been a best-seller like many of his novels, but then fiction often beats fact
