I have to admit to being tremendously disappointed in this novel, especially as it had been picked up and reprinted by Persephone Books.
The story follows Martha Freke, an awkward girl who grows into an equally awkward woman. Martha is a child when the book begins, and while some of her encounters are funny, mostly because she doesn't understand the niceties and absurdities of social conventions, by the time she graduates and becomes a student at Oxford, they just become painful to read. And what's worse, it feels as if the author has gone from laughing at society to laughing at Martha. A real disappointment of a book.
