Franco d'Andrea and Renato Sellani are two giants in the world of European jazz, with the former known slightly better to worldwide audiences because of his more extensive recordings as a leader. This CD is part of an extended studio session from May 9, 2001, the remainder of which is available on L'Avventura Dell'incontro. Five of the seven tracks are time-tested standards, though the low-key approach to "Angel Eyes" is not actually tentative, but simply a different angle in its interpretation. Both "Everything Happens to Me" and "(There Is) No Greater Love" start softly, but gradually become more strident and aggressive as each piece is thoroughly explored. The chops finally start flying fast and furious in "Amore Baciami," and also the playful improvised blues tune that closes the CD, "Next Time, Paolo" (another take of it concludes the companion CD from this same session), though it is slightly frustrating that the latter song is faded out. Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi
