Andr??? Breton (1896-1966) was one of the founders and most controversial exponents of Surrealism, defining the movement in his first Surrealist Manifesto as "pure psychic automatism." Fleeing from Europe during World War II, Breton traveled throughout North America staging Surrealist exhibitions and lending his voice to several political movements.
