What I consider to be fascinating is that this art became famous thanks to the sailors. They were credited with expanding it through the ports they stopped into different countries. They carved knives, bottles and other things on the ship and used them in exchange of something that they wanted or needed when they landed. Around the 19th century, even sailors rendered ceilings and hammocks with a process called "line knotting." However, the main characteristic of Macram??? is its practicality.
