"Ma Bo'le's Second Life," is a story by Xiao Hong (1911-1942) a well-known female writer of the early twentieth century. It is translated and substantially edited by Howard Goldblatt. The best place to start reading is on page 246, where there is an essay by Goldblatt, "Author/Translator/Author."
Ma Bo'le is a wealthy, westernized, dilettante with a family. The story is about his and his family's flight from the Japanese, during the invasion of China in the 1930's. It is in a sense a satire, but with a desperate undertone that keeps the reader's attention. It's also a book of "War Literature," that compares well to the many classics of that genre. The book is a masterpiece of writing and editing, and makes me want to read more of her work and of Goldblatt's translations.
The story reminds me of a contemporary book by Sheng Keyi, "Wild Fruit," which is about a family fighting to survive the modernization of China, and which is the best of Sheng's three books that have been published so far.
