Dick Van Dyke stars as U.S. Navy pilot Lieutenant Robinson Crusoe in one of Disney's weakest comedies. Like in the Daniel Defoe story, Crusoe finds himself alone on a deserted island, but this time he arrives there after ejecting from his disabled plane on a mission in the South Pacific. He befriends a chimp who is part of the space program and long thought to be lost at sea. Only the popularity of Dick Van Dyke from his television show and his wonderful performance in Mary Poppins could attribute for the $8 million this misfire brought in at the box office. The highlights of the feature are the special effects. Dan Pavlides, Rovi

I guess trying to modernize a classic is okay. Disney does it fairly well here. Instead of a deck hand, we have an abandoned fighter pilot. Instead of a ship wreck for provisions, he finds a Japanese WW II sub. Instead of another guy he is blessed with the georgeous Nancy Kwan.
Half the movie Disney takes advantage of Dick Van Dyke's face which is a cast of its own, so in that regard, Disney 'cast' well for the 'castaway'. The other half of the movie is a riotous romp around the island which Crusoe has transformed with the salvaged sub gear. Hilarious at times but trite at times too. Worth the watch for youngsters who are interested in the tales of Crusoe. There are no special features on the DVD.
