Nonetheless, Love in Exile is a high watermark of the band's career. From the off-kilter, pulse-like minute or so of kick drum that cuts directly into the opener, this album revels in its sleazy, dirty excesses as much as its bare-boned, warts-and-all, lo-fi strutting. Sure, half of it is hipper-than-thou New York posturing, but the Cranks sure do it well, from quiet, lounge-like creepers to blues laments to Scientists-styled garage romps.
