This is true of both the theological and cultural vocabulary.The gay world has many words to describe its various sexual preferences. To avoid confusion and to make the language simple, this book uses only two words: homosexual and gay-both used in a gender-neutral way.HomosexualI use the word "homosexual" for a person who experiences sexual attraction for someone of the same sex. Such an attraction fits the category of temptation. Temptation is not sin. Temptation that is acted upon is sin.Many followers of Jesus endure tremendous same-sex attraction but never act on that temptation. They practice celibacy just as Jesus did. They do not define their lives by their sexual orientation but rather transcend this temptation the same way the alcoholic does who stands up at the AA meeting and says, "Hi. My name is [insert name here], I am an alcoholic, and no alcohol has passed my lips in 37 years...."I am not sure why such persons continue to identify themselves by either their beverage or their sexual preferences, but since they do, I respect and use their vocabulary.GayI use the word "gay" for a person who practices homosexual behavior whether in defiance or ignorance regarding the Bible's clear teaching against this sin. Some of these individuals are militant and vocal advocates of the homosexual cultural revolution that includes gay marriage.
