Sara Burkhart, thirty-seven, has just learned her husband of twenty years has filed for divorce. He's leaving her everything and moving to Florida to start over. Her two children, Jenny and Richard, Jr., don't seem to care. Needing to recover and figure what to do with the rest of her life, she escapes to a rented beach house in New Kensington, NJ where her life takes a drastic turn. The residents are friendly, but different. The house is haunted by two sea captains, dead for 160 years. She's strangely attracted to one of them. The town residents are friendly, but strange. One, Galen Andrews, oddly resembles one of her ghosts. Thus begins a strange interlude of time-travel journeys to the 1860s, a little-known Civil War episode, Sara's love for a homeless mute boy, and her real-time involvement in a tax fraud scheme that endangers the whole town. Jenny arrives on her door step in trouble, gets caught in the time travel, and Sara finally learns how terrific she is. Just when her new life is looking good, disaster strikes, the town vanishes, and Sara loses the one man would be the love of her life. Can love lost in time be found again?
