After serving on the front lines of World War I, and then being the first non-Jewish intellectual removed from his professorship by Hitler, he emerged as a leading proponent of existentialism. Using its insights to better understand human doubts and anxiety, as well as to challenge life's destructive forces, he very early on identified the dangers of scientific materialism, religious fundamentalism, and industrialization and its commodification of nature. Exposing the sense of meaninglessness each contributed to the nascent modern worldview, he went on to formulate his radical concept of the "God above God," helping bridge the gap between the secular and the religious. In "Love, Gravity, and God," Yunt presents, in clear language, the basic concepts and ideas in Tillich's challenging magnum opus, his three-volume "Systematic Theology."
