A compelling ghost story from the internationally bestselling author of WICKED Winifred Rudge, a writer struggling to get beyond the runaway success of her mass-market astrology book, travels to London to start her new novel about the ghost of Jack the Ripper. Upon her arrival, she finds that her step-cousin and old friend John Comestor has disappeared, and a ghostly presence seems to have taken over his home. Is the spirit Winnie's great-great-grandfather, who, family legend claims, was Charles Dickens's childhood inspiration for Ebenezer Scrooge? Could it be the ghostly remains of Jack the Ripper? Or a phantasm derived from a more arcane and insidious origin? Winnie begins to investigate and finds herself the unwilling audience for a drama of specters and shades - some from her family's peculiar history and some from her own unvanquished past. In the spirit of A. S. Byatt's Possession, with dark echoing overtones of A Christmas Carol, Lost presents a rich fictional world that will enrapture its readers.

I had already read Wicked and Mirror Mirror by Maguire and was really excited when I received Lost, thinking that it would be equally as great. I was disappointed. The first half of the book was rather boring, but I continued on hoping that Maguire would turn it around. The ending was entertaining and I thought it somewhat redeemed the first half. Still, not my favorite. I haven't lost hope though, and will definitely be reading more Maguire in the future.

not the best...
After getting tickets for 'Wicked' on Broadway, I read all of the G. Maguire books. I enjoyed all of them immensely except for "Lost," which I found boring, hard to follow, and not worth the read. I think it more worthy of a thesis in a library bookshelf, than an enjoyable book. I will admit that while it was interesting to see an author utilizing obscure quotes to entice the reader, if the reader wasn't a literary hound, the book was just plain tedious. Maguire ricochets back and forth between the main character's relationships, and unlike Faulkner or Wharton, doesn't carry it off. When things finally become interesting at the end, due to a circumstantial spiritual possession by the author's house-haunting spirit, this too becomes boring and, like the rest of the novel, anticlimactic. I would definitely not suggest this novel from Maguire.

Lost is the time it took to read this one!
This book is a definite pass! The plot was vague. The main characters were whiney and flat. I kept reading hoping for something to grab my attention and make an impression, but was sadly disappointed. My advice is to leave this one on the shelf.
