The romantic magicians takes part in one of Bnichous most ambitious research project, that begins with The time of the prophets and is followed by The writers coronation, this being a series where the historian describes the transformation process of a French romantic writer. It is based on the study of the different ideological systems at the end of XVIII century, as well as the conflicts between dogma and critical freedom and disappointment due to the failure of the revolutionary ideals and the philosophy insufficiency of the period, Bnichou even expands his analysis to include three key French authors: Alphonse de Lamartine, Alfred de Vigny and Victor Hugo, who towards 1830 became simultaneously - according to our author- "authors of poems, thinkers, men of influence and action," a sort of "lay priests." The romantic literature emerges like a new way of thinking and of hope for the France of the first half of the XIX century.
