Los Crooners Cubanos is a repackaged reissue of a 2000 compilation on Sound Triangle titled Cuban Crooners. It compiles Cuban pop vocal music from the '50s onward, but unfortunately provides no recording dates for the individual selections. The music is drawn from the catalog of the Cuban label Sound Triangle and was recorded throughout a period spanning 1956 to 1983. Some of the cuts also appear on Empire Musicwerks' three-CD box set Caja Cubana, including "Fuí Cupable," an early recording by Manuel "Puntillita" Licea of the Buena Vista Social Club. Many of the cuts are orchestrated Cuban pop songs featuring crooned vocals, but others seem out of place. For example, Peter Fernandez's "Cuando Vuelva a Tu Lado" sounds like a disco-era recording with fast rhythms on a hi-hat cymbal and extensive soloing on a distorted electric guitar. Los Crooners Cubanos contains enjoyable music for those who want nothing more than a package of songs by Cuban singers, but listeners who would prefer to learn something about the singers and recordings are not well served. ~ Greg Adams, Rovi
