Mmmmmm
Magic and immortality. An immortal king is called to a mortal girl in her dreams and through her anger. He is not only immortal but some kind of a flying cat beast that is King/leader of his clan/tribe/people. While the premise is farfetched it works in the story as the reader is led to see only this. It brings to mind fairy tales - but told without cartoonage. The story is slow initially - partially due to the fact that there is a glossary in the back (hate to flip back and forth to try to acertain what is meant/said). BUT, even with the fairy tale idea - the book was okay. Not one I would pick up for a second read, but not one I hated either. The story IS interesting and one can see how it will unfold into the next three books in the series. A note from the author states it started as a 1200 page manuscript. Decidedly, they cut the book up into 3/4 parts to make it passable for sale. I am on the fence. I originally picked it up thinking it a period peice. True enough - kings court and nobility abounds, but it is really about societies coexisting with fears inherent to magic, demons, beasts, etc. If you have a mind for liking stories based in lore about dragons and the like, this is a read you may enjoy. If you just like to see a well told story - this may also prompt a view. If you like a suspense novel or a purely romance but hate them when they are not swift to unfold - this is probably not for you. It is a well written book, and a story that is told well - but only fair in my estimation.
