This long overdue new edition of Stephen Meats' first collection not only brings his poems back into print in revised and corrected form for a new generation of readers, but also includes a new preface by the author, two interviews, commentary on the poetry by Greg Kuzma, and other new material. Meats' poems serve as tutorials in seeing the world with fresh sight. He calls attention to the action of observation. His dynamic is not the still earth, but the shiftings of winds and seasons, and more so, the shifts of the human mind. These are not poems for spectators, but poems for readers ready to participate in exploration of new territory. In 2013 Meats published a mixed-genre collection of poems and stories, Dark Dove Descending and Other Parables (Mammoth Publications). His poems and stories have appeared in numerous journals, including Kansas Quarterly, The Quarterly, Tampa Review, Arete: The Journal of Sport Literature, Hur???kan, Flint Hills Review, Prairie Poetry, Dos Passos Review, Angel Face, and The Laughing Dog, and in the anthologies Kansas Stories (1989), Begin Again (2011), and To the Stars Through Difficulties (2012). Meats lives in Pittsburg, Kansas, with his wife, Ann, three Boston Terriers, seven cats, and five hives of bees. He is Professor Emeritus of English at Pittsburg State University.
