Seller's Description:
Fine- in Fine- jacket. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall. 254 pages. "On C.S. Forester's death, the archives of his bank revealed the autobiography of his first thirty-one years. To the readers of his novels, and to would-be writers, and those fascinated by the career of writing, it is an absorbing work. The last part of the book recounts Forester's chastening early experiences with publishers and the desperate application to both serious literary effort and hack work which for the time being became his life. Also, reprinted in this volume is the text of The Hornblower Companion, written thirty years later when his success had reached its height." FINE-HARDCOVER, FINE-DUST JACKET. Dust jacket protected with a clear plastic acid-free jacket.

Seller's Description:
Near Fine in Near Fine jacket. First American edition. Near fine with a touch of toning along the top edge in near fine dust jacket with a few spot along the spine and tiny tear at the crown. Foresters autobiography of his first 31 years.
This is superb account of an artist's early life, his struggles to get published, and his dedication to perfecting his craft to suit himself rather than simply the demands of the marketplace. It is a must read for any aspiring writer, and is a classic example of "life imitating art", to paraphrase Henry James. The book reminds me of George Gissing's protagonist, Edwin Reardon in "New Grub Street" or Jack London's autobiographical character Martin Eden. I only wish there had been a "sequel"---"beyond forty"!
