The brief liner notes to the short album Lonesome Valley (subtitled "A Collection of American Folk Music") describe the contents as "scraps," alternate takes, and outtakes from recording sessions held six years before the disc's 1950 release as a 01" LP. (It has since remained in the Folkways catalog, successively reissued on other media, including 12" LP, cassette, and CD.) Circa 1944, then, folksingers Tom Glazer, Woody Guthrie, Butch Hawes, Lee Hays, Cisco Houston, Bess Lomax, and Pete Seeger, in various combinations, put down these off-the-cuff performances on acetates at the offices of Moses Asch, then running his Asch and Disc Records labels. (Asch later went bankrupt and may have lost control of some of the master recordings to Stinson Records before reorganizing and founding Folkways.) As the liner notes suggest, these particular performances are a bit more casual than usual, with the occasional blown lyric or off-key vocal. But the historical nature of the sessions and the personnel involved make even the lesser results valuable to fans. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
