The goal of the Blackbird program from the beginning was to develop a Mach 3 vehicle that could accomplish high-altitude reconnaissance missions. The cold, black, futuristic vehicle accomplished the goal on all counts, and along the way, there was also a diversion to make an offensive weapon out of the sleek vehicle. The complete story is told here, along with a selection of rare photos.

Seller's Description:
New. Aviation-Post World War II Unbelievably the supersonic B-58 bomber was designed in the late 1940s but the first flight of the prototype did not take place until late 1956. It would not look out of place in the 21st century and the delta-wing, Mach 2 Hustler had the performance of a fighter but its career was short due to technical problems and excessive costs. It was withdrawn in 1970 having only become operational in mid 1960. The basic design was intended to be truly multi-role with ECM, missile launching and even fighter-bomber versions planned. Bill Holder (also published as William G. Holder) was a prolific aviation and technology author. The Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird" is a long-range, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft that was operated by the United States Air Force. It was developed as a black project from the Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft in the 1960s by Lockheed and its Skunk Works division. American aerospace engineer Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was responsible for many of the design's innovative concepts. During aerial reconnaissance missions, the SR-71 operated at high speeds and altitudes to allow it to outrace threats. If a surface-to-air missile launch were detected, the standard evasive action was simply to accelerate and outfly the missile. The SR-71 was designed with a reduced radar cross-section. The SR-71 served with the U.S. Air Force from 1964 to 1998. A total of 32 aircraft were built; 12 were lost in accidents, none were lost to enemy action. The SR-71 has been given several nicknames, including "Blackbird". It has held the world record for the fastest air-breathing manned aircraft since 1976.
