Excerpt from Loca Patriciana: An Identification of Localities, Chiefly in Leinster, Visited by Saint Patrick and His Assistant Missionaries, and of Some Contemporary Kings and Chieftains; With an Essay on the Tree Patricks, Palladius, Sen Patrick, and Patrick Mac Calphurn A residence of some years amid the scenes described in this volume, with a personal knowledge of the best local shanachies, enabled him to complete from various sources these legends by comparison, and addition when defective. A mere casual visitor can scarcely arrive at this result; it is only by residence and local knowledge that success can be attained in inquiries of this nature. As to other places with which he was not so well ao quainted, he found out trustworthy persons to give the needful information which was verified as far as possible from independent sources. The inquirer into our na tional legends and antiquities has nearly always these difficulties to encounter in his researches, as few are found now-a-days who take an interest in these fast fading traditions. The cause of this decay of old intel ligence is to be attributed remotely to the operation of the Penal Laws of past times, which had the efiect, in some degree at least, of obliterating these old memories.
