This was one of the best intermediate level children's novels that I have ever read. I could not put it down and found so many encellent literacy aspects to this book. The story could easily be enjoyed by both girls and boys and has such rich historical reference. It would be perfect to use as a classroom novel study particularly during black history month. I also enjoyed the the many biblical references and found the juxtapositions of the two main characters brilliant. The use of symbolism is fantastic and I found that each character in the story was so multidimentional that they really come alive in the story. It is just an overall fantastic book and I guarantee that if you have an adolescent child that is not one to pick up a book and read often, this may be one to purchase for them.
