Receiving a wide release in Europe and a limited release in the U.S., Live in Ukraine is a live set -- coming, as these things do in 2009, in a variety of guises, including a two-CD/one-DVD set and deluxe editions that grow ever grander with an escalating price tag -- capturing Queen & Paul Rodgers mega-charity concert of September 12, 2008, where they filled Freedom Square to assist Ukraine's AntiAids Foundation. A crowd of 350,000 showed and millions more watched on television in their homes, all seeing Queen & Paul Rodgers run through all the expected classics -- much heavier on the former than the latter, although "Shooting Star," "Feel Like Making Love," and "All Right Now" all rear their heads -- adding a few cuts from their collaborative studio album. This is not demonstratively different in sound or feel from the band's previous outing with Rodgers, the 2005 live Return of the Champions, but the group does seem goosed by the sense of scale, giving this some sense of force and majesty missing from Return, plus the fit of rough-and-tumble Rodgers with the pomp-n-circumstance Queen is getting better, even if it remains a match made in the boardroom, not heaven. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
