Released at a time when Medicine Head's "classic" repertoire remained infuriatingly unavailable to anyone without a vinyl fetish, Live in London captures the band on-stage at a point just past the peak of its powers. Over a year had passed since their last hit single, "Slip and Slide," during which time the band left Polydor Records and signed instead to the extraordinarily ill-fated WWA -- by the time of this show, the label had folded, a new Medicine Head album was trapped in the vault, and the band itself was on the brink of collapse.Still, they held it together long enough for a remarkably good-natured performance at the Marquee, mashing their own hits-and-bits with a dynamic stream of oldie-themed covers. For whatever reasons, the group's earliest recordings are given the lion's share of the set; no less than six of the opening eight songs are taken from Medicine Head's New Bottles Old Medicine debut album, while the group's subsequent hitmaking career is marked out only by the closing "One and One Is One."But the performance is no less magnificent for all that, and with the sound quality almost shockingly excellent, Live in London almost compensates for the absence of any other period recordings on the shelves. Almost. Although it would have been nice to hear "Rising Sun" one more time. ~ Dave Thompson, Rovi
