To hear one of the last-ever performances by Mk II of Deep Purple (the lineup responsible for their biggest hits -- and some feel responsible for creating the whole heavy metal genre), track down a copy of 2007's Live at the NEC 1993. Recorded on November 9, 1993, it was only little more than a week later that Ritchie Blackmore would abruptly leave the band mid-tour (first replaced by Joe Satriani, before a permanent replacement -- Steve Morse -- signed on). Like other recordings from this tour (namely Live in Stuttgart 1993), the group's problems behind the scenes did not make their way onto the concert stage, as the band still sounds as heavy and rocking as ever -- especially on such all-time Purple classics as "Black Night," "Space Truckin'," and "Smoke on the Water," as well as then-new compositions like "The Battle Rages On." Live at the NEC 1993 offers evidence that Deep Purple's best-ever lineup was certainly not resting on its laurels at the time -- even with a major member change on the immediate horizon. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi
