Time-Life Music's Live at Newport, containing tracks licensed from Vanguard Records, was released as a bonus CD for people who bought the mail-order firm's four-double-CD package The Folk Years. Its 12 tracks, drawn from Vanguard's recordings of the Newport Folk Festival in the early and mid-'60s, largely parallel those on the main set; many of the same performers turn up, in several cases singing the same songs. But Mississippi John Hurt ("Candy Man") and Ian & Sylvia ("Four Strong Winds") are not otherwise heard on The Folk Years, and their songs, plus "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" (Joan Baez), "Scotch and Soda," and "Hard, Ain't It Hard" (both by the Kingston Trio) make their sole appearances on this add-on. Since the main set consists almost exclusively of studio recordings, a sampler of recordings from the most prestigious concert series of the folk revival makes a nice complement. Like the rest of the set, this is more a popular sampler than a comprehensive survey. There are no annotations (not even any indication of which years the performances come from), and the 12 tracks just skim the surface of what Vanguard recorded at Newport. Still, such major figures as Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, and Judy Collins are featured, performing important folk songs of the era, such as "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" and "Blowin' in the Wind." As such, the album gives a taste of what the Newport Folk Festivals were like. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
