This is going to be a doozy.
Warning: don't read this to your kids. Don't let your kids read it to you. Its not Frozen or Up. Adults only. I was uncomfortable reading it to myself.
Remember a little nothing book that came out years ago? Maybe even a couple movies? The Shining! Ever since then, when a writer carts his family off to some nowhere place to erase his writer's block I get ticked off. When it's in search of a nasty witch tale my jaw clenches. HE can go, but leave the family out of it. David Binder's that man, needing a bestseller, diving into his past after a ghost that has been, forgive me, haunting him most of his life. This is going to be THAT book. He's back, baby!
You can see why he wants to mine it for the tarnished gold buried there. The first section though, would make any sane person run in the opposite direction. Violence, perversion -- of course, Binder thinks heading to ground zero of this nightmare is going to get him the good stuff. What it quickly gets him is in over his head. Way over his head.
I could mention the Dog-- Oh! Nice try. Get your own copy. Now. I'm not going to be the one to spoil it for you.
Gay's deep South roots serve him well in this genre, fueling his singular gift of language that molds words into a unique regional art.
Here's the Gay you've followed AND secret depths of Gay's mind you never suspected. Just be ready for that sense of dread...

And while we're at it, let's recognise the real horror story here is that this novel came perilously close to never existing at all. With William Gay's passing, the world was about to be deprived of LITTLE SISTER DEATH and several other unknown works. His friend, archivist/editor Michael White, spent days, weeks, months pulling together handwritten notebooks, segments, fragments -- piecing together the author's gems for us to enjoy now. Mr. White will take no credit for this ongoing work, so let me shine the spotlight on him for a moment before he ducks back into his office to go back to work. Because, yes, I believe there is more Wilkiam Gay to come....
