Paul Anka returned to RCA Records (his label for most of the 1960s) after a not-very-successful stay at Buddah in the early '70s and a major comeback on United Artists in the mid-'70s. He was cooling commercially again by the time he made this well-crafted album of contemporary romantic ballads, but still hot enough to crack the Top 40 with "This Is Love," which was an even bigger Easy Listening hit. Producer David Wolfort managed a backup that was lush without overwhelming the singer, and if Anka (who wrote or co-wrote only four of the ten songs) was not making much of a personal statement in these songs, he nevertheless sang them effectively. The second side of the LP was the livelier, as though the team had paid the bills on the first side and could rock out a bit more. Especially on "Don't Ever Say Goodbye" and "Love Me Lady" (both of which bore his writing credit), Anka sang with conviction, such that when he claimed to be "a peasant kind of poet / With a strong desire to show it," you believed him. And "Brought Up In New York (Brought Down In L.A.)" bit even deeper, casting Anka in the lugubrious, if heart-felt and knowing style of Neil Diamond. Another familiar landscape, courtesy of songwriting pros Bruce Roberts and Carole Bayer Sager, was the album-closing "Starmaker." If the first side were this good, the album would have earned a higher rating. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
